A pristine village…
The Mesta village in southwest is one the biggest villages in Chios island with population about 500 people with a small port in 4km from it. Every summer it is filled with people from every age group who are interested in its picturesque landscape and its welcoming residents. Your travel in time starts just when you arrive. This village is built exactly like a castle with narrow alleys, cool houses and a shady central square.
From the first sight you will understand its fortress-like shape with narrow alleys which make it like a maze and it is very common to ask from locals to lead you to the “Taxiarhis” church and to the central square “Livadi”.
At the central square a guest can find typical cafes with wooden chairs where he can enjoy his coffee and taste local spoon sweets like “ipovrixio” with mastic flavor under the shade of trees. Also, he can taste local delicacies accompanied with Chian wine or suma (product of figs distillation) at the picturesque taverns.
Do not miss to visit the small shops with handmade products made by silver or ceramic.
After all, it is worth to be mentioned that during the year local festivals are taking place in the village. Well-known is the festival of “Kathari Deutera” which is a lampoon of the trials from Turkish judges during the Turkish thrall.
